Does it rain more at the weekend?
The project is now over so thanks to everyone who helped out! I'll leave the rest of this page up for the time being whilst I work on a summary of the overall project, which will appear here when it's done. I've included a quick summary of some of the background research I did here. Thanks again and hope to see you at MSF 2010.

We want as many people as possible in the Manchester area to make their own rain collector and take measurements of rainfall for one week. We want to know if it rains more at the weekends. Why do we want to know that?!?! Well, its not because rainy weekends ruin your social life (although that is important!) Scientists have long thought that cars, factories and industries that tend to be much more active during the week should affect our weather patterns. But no-one has really been able to show that it does. Maybe your help with our experiment at the Manchester Science Festival will unlock the answers!

It's really easy to make your own rain gauge so please help us! You just need to take a measurement each day during the week Saturday 24th October to Friday 30th October and then come back to this website to give us your measurements! If you can't get a measurement every day, don't worry, just do what you can!

Wireless rain gauge Prize!

There is a chance to win a cool wireless rain gauge (worth £50) and a Royal Meteorological Society umbrella (priceless!) for anyone contributing rain measurements or who comes to the festival event!

All the results will be used during the festival in a special event – "You are the scientist: does it rain more at the weekend?" (see below for more details).

At the festival we will be hosting an event based on this data:

You are the scientist: does it rain more at the weekend?
Drop in on Saturday 31st October 2009 between 11am-3pm at MOSI

Using data collected just before the festival and historical weather observations, you will come to your own conclusions about rainfall in Manchester. Scientists from Manchester University will be on hand to help you out and perform some small experiments to guide your findings or you can just come along and chat about the weather.
